Legal Metrology Certification for Weighbridge

Legal Metrology Certification ensures that your weighbridge complies with the standards set under the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and related state rules. It confirms that the weighbridge is accurate, properly installed, tested, stamped, and legally approved for commercial transactions.

This certification is mandatory for industries where weight is directly linked to billing, taxation, dispatch, procurement, mining, cement, steel, logistics, agriculture, etc.

Why Legal Metrology Certification is Important

  • Mandatory for the commercial use of a weighbridge
  • Protects business from penalties, sealing, or legal action
  • Ensures compliance with State Legal Metrology Department norms
  • Required after new installation, major repair, or calibration

2. Accuracy & Transparency Benefits

  • Assures correct weight measurement
  • Eliminates disputes between buyer & seller
  • Builds customer trust
  • Prevents revenue leakage due to under/over weighing

3. Business & Quality Enhancement

  • Improves the credibility of your organization
  • Supports ISO and quality management systems
  • Enhances operational efficiency
  • Ensures reliable data for inventory and dispatch planning
  • Strengthens brand reputation

4. Process of Legal Metrology Certification

  1. Inspection of the weighbridge structure & load cells
  2. Testing with standard test weights
  3. Calibration and adjustment (if required)
  4. Accuracy verification
  5. Submission of E-Challan
  6. Inspection officer visit
  7. Testing and checking by the Inspector of Legal Metrology
  8. Stamping & certification by Legal Metrology Officer

Testing & Calibration of Weighbridge with Legal Metrology Approval

1. Pre-Inspection & System Readiness

  • Physical inspection of weighbridge platform, foundation, and approach roads.
  • Checking platform leveling, free movement, and mechanical clearances.
  • Inspection of load cells, mounting assemblies, check rods, and stoppers.
  • Cleaning of pit / platform area to remove debris affecting accuracy.

2. Electrical & Electronic Verification

  • Inspection of load cell cables, junction boxes, connectors, and glands.
  • Verification of earthing, grounding, and power supply stability.
  • Functional check of weighing indicator, display, printer, and peripherals.
  • Ensuring sealing arrangements are intact and tamper-proof as per Legal Metrology norms.

3. Zero & Stability Testing

  • Zero setting with unloaded platform.
  • Observation of zero stability over specified time duration.
  • Adjustment of zero if required, strictly as per manufacturer and Legal Metrology guidelines.

4. Accuracy & Calibration Tests

Calibration shall be carried out using certified standard test weights or approved test methods in the presence of Legal Metrology authorities.

  • Corner (Eccentric Load) Test

    • Placement of test weights at all corners.
    • Verification of uniform response and correction of imbalance.

  • Span / Linearity Test

    • Incremental loading at multiple points (e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% of capacity).
    • Verification of permissible error limits as per Legal Metrology Rules.

  • Repeatability Test

    • Repeated loading and unloading of same test weight.
    • Confirmation of consistent readings within allowable tolerance.

5. Calibration Adjustment & Sealing

  • Adjustment of calibration parameters (zero, span, linearity) where required.
  • Locking of calibration settings after completion.
  • Sealing of indicator, junction box, and other required points as per Legal Metrology procedure.

6. Legal Metrology Inspection & Approval

  • Full cooperation and technical assistance during inspection by Legal Metrology Department.
  • Demonstration of weighbridge performance as per statutory test procedures.
  • Compliance verification with applicable Legal Metrology Act & Rules.
  • Obtaining Legal Metrology Stamping / Approval Certificate upon successful verification.

7. Documentation & Records

  • Preparation and submission of calibration and testing report.
  • Recording of test results, seal numbers, and inspection observations.
  • Display of valid stamping sticker / seal on weighbridge as required.
